From the Larchives…

Lar recently shared his archive of doodles, WIPs, and cancelled project assets with me, and it’s like it’s Christmas all over again. Honestly, it’s better than this Christmas, where the most memorable thing I got was the worst gastro in my life.

I got to look through so much awesome art today, folks, almost all of which was new to me. Starting Thursday, you can expect regular reveals of some interesting LFG pieces that have heretofore gone unseen. To kick it off, here are a few works, already in progress!

First up, exalted cale benny wip02. I assume the “exalted” in the file name refers to the Exalted RPG, an American production based on Eastern high fantasy. I chose this picture because it reminds me just how amazing some of Cale’s looks have been. I often gush over Richard’s design -deservedly so- but Cale’s design is almost as enduring, if understated by comparison. An understated design is perfectly in line with his character, a prototypical hero. Swap genres, as above, and he’s still unmistakably Cale, even if he shares minimal details.

Next up, Pella Portait. I liked this Pella WIP for the opposite reason: his is Pella. Her look regularly changes slightly, but at her core she’s always as ready for violence as she is for a musical number, often at the same time. I do miss the helmet with an upper face mask, so it’s nice to see it represented in this piece. As I read it, Pella is tuning her lute to celebrate killing a troll with a little musical number. It reinforces my feeling that in a comic without Richard, it would be more obvious that Pella is a violent psychopath.

Finally, Steampunk LFG. Of course. I enjoy the aesthetic of steampunk and the thought that goes into a good steampunk redesign, and this is a good steampunk redesign. Lar didn’t just throw some gears and pipes onto the character’s familiar looks and then apply a leather texture, every character has been redesigned from the ground up. The familiar details feel more like Easter Eggs. Everyone looks completely different, and yet if any of single figure from this piece were taken out of context, people who know LFG would see it and say “You know what this reminds me of?”

One of the reasons I chose these three pieces is that they are unfinished. If any of our fans are artistically inclined, I invite you to try your hand at finishing them and submitting your version to [email protected]. I’m always excited to see what our fans can do.

Speaking of what our fans can do, here are your top comments for January 2nd to 6th.

LFG 1049
Mike Fang
“Mornin’ Ralph.”
“Mornin’ Fred.”

Garioki
A celebratory drink to welcome in the New Year, and then the customary fireworks 😀

DuCakedHare
Second-to-last panel could also have read,
“Shall I boil some more water for the tea?”
“OK. I’ll cut some more cake then.”

Galileo Figaro
“And alas such was the tale of the Table of Truce, as short-lived and sudden as actual peace and its end just as abrupt. Covered by the Sheet of Stainlessness and filled with the Tea of Temperance and the Sandwiches of Silent appreciation, the Champagne of Cheers and the Cupcakes of Co-existence, it was not a table suitable for a banquet or a feast or even a wholesome family dinner, it wasn’t ecen enough to satisfy the hunger of one, yet on this table were talked truces and agreements of peace, on this table were made alliances and friendships both short-lived and eternal.
And alas, be it by irony or tragedy or divine guile and malice, it was not by time or by stains or by bad carpentry that the table’s life came to an end, but by an axe.
A war axe.
A war axe made out of magic soul fire.
Kind of an overkill for such a poorly made table, ain’t it?”

NPC 26-10
Joshua Royer
Okay the last two Panels come very close to shit I’ve said in DnD games. XD

DVS BSTrD
No blond Blood elf, no Tauren, no Halfbreed Orc cleric, no dwarf and no Warlock. MUST be the same guys!

Brendon Leenheer
Dude… just stop talking…

Mike Fang
Looking for Group: the comic where over half the characters think ‘tact’ means nailed down.

TDA 151
P. Stein
The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.

Robert Hicks
I say we take off and nuke the site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.

Mike Fang
Amusing.
Poignant.
Tragically accurate.

LFG 1050
Mr. Random
He’s been Disarmed!
now that that’s done…
He came in like a wrecking bull.
Richard can beat him with one arm behind his back now.
Richard:I can keep going you know. I kid you not.

Ryan

Who was in charge of holding the door? HODOR!

Dragoncat
Cue the heroic rescue from the horse!

Blobsy
Sounds like something that could happen in a D&D session.

Nicely done people. I like any week that I have trouble narrowing the comments down to three. Until next time, be excellent to each other!
